Rural development credit to Lesotho includes sociologists

The $5.6 million IDA credit will support the Thaba Bosiu Rural Development Project, a project that "has been carefully molded to fit into the social framework of the communities it is intended to serve" (World Bank/IDA Annual Report 1973, page 26). An initial phase of the project will concentrate on increases in productivity that are possible within the existing social structure. However, the Lesotho government will conduct an extensive educational campaign to promote the transition to new and better land usage, which it is hoped, farmers will soon adopt. The World Bank Group engaged a sociologist familiar with conditions in that part of Africa to help appraise the project; another sociologist will serve as part of the evaluation unit that will monitor the project's progress.
