Kristalina Georgieva becomes interim president
The World Bank Group appoints Kristalina Georgieva as interim World Bank Group president after Jim Yong Kim announced his resignation on January 7, 2019. This is the first time that a woman assumes the position of president at the Bank Group. Georgieva, a Bulgarian economist, had been serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA) since January 2017. She will serve as the Bank’s interim president until April 8, 2019, when David Malpass is installed as the World Bank Group 13th president. On October 1, 2019, Georgieva will take on a new role as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
