Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI) approved
To help accelerate progress toward the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative is supplemented by the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI). Under the MDRI, IDA is expected to provide about $37 billion in debt relief over 40 years to some of the world’s poorest countries. This is in addition to the $17 billion of debt relief already committed by IDA under the HIPC initiative.
