First tourism sector funding for Indonesia approved

While attracting relatively little foreign tourism prior to 1967, in the years between 1967 and 1973 Indonesia experienced rapid growth in the sector. During this six-year period the number of visitors to the country increased by more than 50% annually, reaching an estimated 300,000 visitors by 1973. The Bali Tourism Project, a $16 million IDA credit, will provide infrastructure for a new tourism estate to be developed at Nusa Dua on the island of Bali. Specifically, the project will fund new roads facilitating access to the estate, training facilities for hotel staff, and other facilities and services. The new tourism estate is expected to attract private investors that are prepared to build hotels and other tourism facilities in the area.
