Barber Conable becomes World Bank Group President

Barber Conable is the first career politican to assume the position of World Bank Group president. In 1964, after having served one term in the New York State Senate, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he served for 20 years. During his time as Bank president he will refocus the Bank's work on the fight against poverty and draw attention to environmental problems, population growth, and the role of women in development. He will also oversee one of the largest, most complex Bank reorganizations in its history.
