Timeline Description

The report discusses the decline of Indonesia's population growth rate which, it is argued, was achieved at a relatively low level of income and socio-economic development.

Detail Description
Between 1971 and 1976, Indonesia's average annual population growth rate was 2.0% -- just lower than the annual rate of 2.1% between 1961 and 1966, but much lower than the predicted rate of 2.6%. The report describes Indonesia's family planning program and details its impact on the country's population growth rate. The report reviews the history and organization of the program, attempts to identify those factors which have been responsible for its success, and assesses the program's prospects for the future. The report also attempts to explain fertility behavior and family planning practice as a result of socio-economic factors and describes the contrast of birth rates in the more populous Java-Bali region, where rates fell, and the Outer Islands, which maintains a much higher growth rate.
