Timeline Description

The report reviews progress on economic adjustment in Indonesia and the propospects for economic recovery and growth over the medium term.

Detail Description
The Government of Indonesia spent much of the 1980s managing a faultering economy beset by plummeting oil prices and an increasing debt burden. The government's response to this challenge, initiated in 1983 and evaluated in this report, consisted of four key elements: prudent fiscal and monetary policies; exchange rate management through major Rupiah devaluations in 1983 and 1986; domestic resource mobilization through financial sector and taxation reforms; and trade and industrial policy regime improvement. The report states that the adjustment program succeeded in reducing the country's deficit and reigning-in inflation.
