January 01, 1963

Eighteen newly independent African countries join the World Bank Group

A wave of independence for African countries, cresting in 1960, meant an increase in membership in the World Bank Group. In 1963 alone, 18 new African states join the Bank in a single year. Lending and technical assistance activities in the continent will increase correspondingly in the following years.
